At AV Drilling, we are experts in the field of underground boring in Sydney that extends to the Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Newcastle regions. Underground boring is one of our most in-demand services due to its ability to drill with minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment. AV Drilling follows the proper procedure for underground boring to ensure quality results and safety at all times.
Assess The Area And Enforce Safety Protocols
The first step in any successful project is thoroughly assessing the area to determine the exact requirements of the job. Then after consulting with our client, we put together a plan with our procedures while keeping health and safety in mind at all times.
Pilot Hole
To commence horizontal directional drilling works the drill rig initially drills a pilot bore using the machine’s drill rods. Each rod is bored into the ground gradually making its way from the entry hole to the exit hole at the other end. Various drill heads can be used depending on the type of ground being drilled. Consideration must be given to the existing services and therefore Dial Before You Dig Plans need to be on hand whilst drilling the pilot bore. Existing services near the new bore must also be pot-holed prior to commencement of the pilot hole to ensure their protection.
Reaming
When the pilot hole is completed, we use a reamer to ream the bore to the required diameter. Reaming is done in a few steps, depending on the size of the finished hole. The drill pumps fluid as the reamer is rotating to assist with the drilling process while the drill slurry is being vacuum excavated from the entry and exit holes.
Swiping the Bore Hole
In order to ensure that the hole has been cleared of all excavated material the bore hole is swiped several times to allow for the smooth and friction-free pullback of the pipe.
Pull Back
After the hole has been piloted, reamed and swiped clean, the pipe must now be pulled into the bore. After the required pipes have been rolled out and prepared for pull in, the string/s are attached with a swivel that is attached to a weld cap, preventing the pipes from rotating. Demobilisation and cleanup follow the completion of underground boring.
